Braided elastic is the most popular general use elastic. It can be used in casings for waistlines, sleeve or ankle hems or necklines. Perfect for skirts, pants, jackets, tops. trackies etc. It is manufactured with parallel ribs that run the length of the elastic and becomes narrower as it is stretched horizontally. For this reason it is ideal for use in casings. The width of the elastic determines its tension or strength, Use narrow elastic for light tension and wider for heavier tension.
To thread elastic through a casing:
Trim both ends of the elastic and secure a safety pin lengthways into one end. (Hint: pinning the other end of the elastic to the casing opening will help stop the elastic from pulling all the way through as you thread it. It also helps to ensure the casing is a little wider than the elastic width, to allow easy threading and avoid bunching.) Thread elastic through the casing. Once the elastic is threaded the entire length of the casing, stitch the two ends of elastic together securely, either by hand or the sewing machine. Close casing.
