Braided elastic is the most popular general use elastic. It can be used in casings for sleeves, necklines, jogger pants or waistbands. Perfect for skirts, pants, jackets, tops. trackies etc. It is manufactured with parallel ribs that run the length of the elastic, becoming narrower as it is stretched horizontally making it ideal for use in casings. The width of the elastic determines its tension or strength, Use narrow elastic for light tension and wider for heavier tension.
To thread elastic through a casing:
Ensure the casing is a wider than the elastic width, to allow easy threading and to avoid bunching. Trim both ends of the elastic and secure a safety pin lengthways into the end to be threaded. Pinning the other end of the elastic to the casing opening will help stop the elastic from accidentally pulling all the way through as you thread it. Thread elastic carefully through the casing. Once the elastic is threaded the entire length of the casing, stitch the two ends of elastic together securely, either by hand or with the sewing machine. Hand stitch the casing opening closed.
